…a wonderful and accomplished duo. With the flute’s beautiful ‘voice like’ legato line and the harp’s magical light touch they make a marvelous duo. It was a pleasure not only to work with such talented instrumentalists but also very nice people.
Michelle and Julia have been performing together for almost ten years, after being brought together to perform Dave Heath’s Beyond The Dark. After this performance they were asked to perform the Mozart Flute and Harp Concert at the Guildhall in Bath with the Bath Spa University Orchestra and shortly after Topaz was formed.
Michelle is a seasoned performer and qualified teacher, demonstrating innate talent and musical intelligence, enhanced by an appreciation of musical aesthetics (Nicholas Vallis-Davies, ex LSO Principal Flute). Michelle studied at Bath Spa University College where she specialised in performance, graduating with an Honours degree. As well as attending numerous master classes and courses, Michelle continues to study with Nicholas Vallis-Davies. Currently, Michelle is principal flautist for Brunel Sinfonia and Bristol Classical Players orchestras, the West Bristol Concert Windband and she is also a regular guest soloist with the Avon and Somerset Constabulary Male voice choir. Michelle teaches in a variety of schools in both the Bristol and South Gloucestershire areas and is increasingly in demand as private flute teacher.
Julia started playing the harp at 16 when Oxfordshire County Youth Orchestra needed a harpist to play with them and offered both a harp on loan and a teacher. After leaving university with a degree in Pure Mathematics, she studied privately with Imogen Barford (professor of harp at the Guildhall College of Music, London). Julia has continued to play in orchestras and regularly plays for Bristol Concert Orchestra, New Bristol Sinfonia and Brunel Sinfonia. Alongside performing she teaches privately at the Redmaids’ School and Colston Girls’ school in Bristol, and coaches the Bristol County Youth Orchestra harpist.
